Jane Hovey, 83, of Linwood, NJ passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of cherished memories.
Born in Paterson, NJ on November 30, 1940, she was the eldest of nine children of George and Dorothea Richardi. Jane was very proud of her large family and spent her early years making memories with siblings, cousins, grandparents, and neighbors in their Lincoln Park home. She graduated from Boonton High School in 1958 and immediately enrolled in Jersey City Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1961.
Jane and her beloved husband of 48 years, Corky, who passed away in 2016, were destined for each other. But Jane’s road to finding her one true love was marked with plenty of travel and exploration–before their chance meeting at a cozy bar in Manhattan.
“BC” as she lovingly referred to the period “Before Corky” was when Jane’s adventurous spirit was in full gear. She loved to share stories of her 20-something exploits—living with girlfriends in NYC, accepting a nursing stint in Miami, jetting to Paris with friends, buying a VW beetle upon arrival and driving throughout Europe—city to city. She was independent and free and loved to remind young girls everywhere to take time to do the same.
Back to that bar in Manhattan, it was 1968, Corky shared a smoke with Jane, and the rest was history—lobster dates and trips to Aruba lead to a 1969 wedding, reception in Central Park and honeymoon in Barbados. Jane was finally ready to settle down in the suburbs. They moved to Wyckoff, NJ, just in time for their beloved son, Douglas to be born in 1972.
In Wyckoff, Jane made lifelong friends through the neighborhood and junior women’s club. She spent her days as a personal aide to the elderly, but her free time was filled with more travels, family barbeques, and bridge nights. To escape the hustle and bustle of North Jersey, the family moved south to Linwood in 1987. Jane (to no surprise) turned new acquaintances, co-workers and neighbors into the closest of friends.
Over the years, “Nurse Jane”, as she was lovingly referred to by family, volunteered at Shore Memorial Hospital, and worked as a nurse for Dr. Joel Bayer of Margate, and, finally for ophthalmologist, Dr. Rick Dunn where her dedication and compassion left an indelible mark on the lives of those she cared for.
Jane also found great joy in being a part of her son Doug’s life. His friends and their families became her extended family. She valued being included in his experiences at Mainland HS, Ursinus College and for many years beyond.
But nothing was sweeter to Jane than being a grandmother to her beloved grandchildren Fiona and Cade–the source of Jane’s pride and joy. Jamma (her chosen grandma name) provided a lifetime of memories for her grandchildren– surprise Halloween visits, trips to Smithville and the boardwalk, Easter egg hunts, Christmas mornings– Jane utterly loved being Jamma, and Fiona and Cade loved her right back.
In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles (Corky) Hovey and step-son Billy Hovey. She is survived by her son Douglas (Erin) of Gilbertsville, PA, and two grandchildren, Fiona and Cade Hovey. Jane is also survived by her 8 siblings—Sr. Lois Richardi, Allen Richardi (Denise), Frances Scherzer (Ray), Janet Speelman, James Richardi (JoAnn), Carol Riggin (Glenn), Jody Schneider (Glen), and Thomas Richardi (Margaret), and will be deeply missed by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
While we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories that she leaves behind. Her impact on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her will endure, a testament to a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jane’s name may be made to the PFIC Network www.pfic.org, an organization close to Jane and her family’s heart.
